The former Portsmouth midfielder scored his first goal on Teesside since his move from Fratton Park in the dying minutes. Boro took the lead through an Afonso Alves penalty after 53 minutes. Referee Lee Mason awarded the spot kick in controversial circumstances when Daniel Sturridge tangled with Middlesbrough defender David Wheater on the edge of the area. Mark Hughes’ side couldn’t find the form that saw them beat Stoke 3-0 at the weekend and left the North East feeling frustrated as they were thwarted time after time by Boro keeper Ross Turnbull. Gareth Southgate praised his goalkeeper´s “superb” performance.    |
